rise from the ashes like a phoenix or shot like a coyote? Friday, Sep 4 2009

The Phoenix Coyotes is turning out to be the source of most NHL news these days. The events are taking on a soap opera like appearance, with law suits flying and most probably major scheming going on behind closed door. Oh, how much would I give to be there in the middle of all of this right now!

So far, in the Saga of the Coyotes… (as far as I know. I try as I might to keep up, but there’s a ton of news. And it all depends on who’s side the story is spun. No one knows, but everyone guesses.)

The franchise went belly-up, despite being heavily subsidized by the League. Offers were made, most notably by one Canadian by the name Bilsillie. The League is holding back nothing to keep the Coyotes off Bilsillies hands, including making a bid for it themselves. Why? For one, Bilsillie wants to move the team to Hamilton, Ontario. The league wants it to stay. Two, they don’t like him, he’s considered “deficient in both character and integrity”. Third, there’s the Toronto Maple Leafs. Which is a whole new can of worms, but I’ll get to that later.

The bankruptcy court for the Coyotes is supposed to be on Sept 10. The only thing we know for sure is that that won’t be the last day in court, no matter how the judge rules. Both sides have said they’ll take it to the next level.

Why should the Coyotes stay in Arizona? It’s not like the region’s that crazy about hockey, as the slighter than dwindling fan interest has proved. Ontario on the other hand is the home ground of the game. The Canadians are always in favor of more hockey, so why should they be deprived that?

Standing lease, for starters. The city on Glendale has contracts with the franchise that are still standing. Should the team relocate, lawsuits on breach of contract would follow.

Also, one cannot help pointing out that in the past 10 years, the League has kept franchises such as Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators afloat. While Nashville is taking a hit, being in the “Sunshine Belt”, the case for the other three teams can be made. Should they too have been moved when the going got rough? And yes, two of those did file for bankruptcy.

In the end, the League is supposed to have a say in relocation issues. In this instance, they’re arguing, among other things, the concern over the travel schedules of the other 29 teams. The court acknowledged these concerns. Point for the League.

As for the Leagues dislike of Bilsillie in particular, the guy should take a hint. This is the third franchise he’s buying, and once again he was voted against 26-0 by the NHL Board of Governors in July. Maybe hockey’s not your sport, Dahlin’! Or try learn to play by the rules. The League has a right to approve the offers when it comes to new owners of teams, and they intend to hold on to that right, as we’ve seen here. The Board of Governors ruled against you!

Additional curve ball into the mix is the anti trust laws. The pro sports have been in and out of court since the 50’s trying to make the case that they are not in violation of the antitrust legislation, that they do not have monopoly power and that there’s no blockage of entry. Now, some argue, that Mr. Bilsillie is very efficiently being blocked by the NHL from the pro hockey markets. Prospective lawsuits to come, mark my words. The problem with lawsuits and court cases regarding monopoly power and market entry and antitrust issues is that once one league loses, we can anticipate the collapse of all major professional leagues. Bye bye NBA, good bye football. Dangerous and big issues are at stake, and I’m not at all surprised the other three big leagues are keeping a close eye on this.

The BOG vote on the whole ownership issue does seem like a monopoly power. Unless it’s a majority vote. And either way, that rule has withstood the antitrust battles. It’s proven to be if not good, at least law-abiding.

Now, the Maple Leafs… They’ve been suing the League over what’s the procedure to allow new teams in a previous teams ‘home territory’. A bit of background, if you please. The NHL Constitution says each team has a right for it’s ‘home territory’, an area around the place where it plays, and no other team can come there without its permission. Now, in repeated antitrust hearings the NHL has said that they are not in violation of the antitrust laws, as it takes a majority vote to allow the new team. The Maple Leafs say it has to be unanimous. Hamilton, Ontario, is in Toronto’s home territory. As it happens, it’s also on Buffalo’s. So while Sabres haven’t, as far as I know, joined the Maple Leafs in the court battle, they have an equal case.

Allowing the situation to get where the Toronto Maple Leafs veto the relocation of Coyotes, a certain action at that point, it seems, would be the first knock on the foundation of pro sports leagues in North America. They’d start to crumble, and eventually be demolished, after that.

And we can’t have that.

The questions keep piling. Who’s right and wrong is no longer the main question, but on whose rules we’re playing and, maybe most importantly, who are we playing with. The NHL says they don’t want to play with Bilsillie. They said so, 26 to 0. Now the court will have to decide whether or not they can still be forced to do so. And if so, where.

Hockey’s back! Or I’m back with hockey. Either way, expect a post about the game in a few days.

Nonsatiation Thursday, Jun 4 2009

The modern micro economic theory and the theory of consumer choice builds on the concept of local nonsatiation. The idea that no matter how much we have, no matter which of our preferences are fulfilled, there is always at least on bundle of goods, material or immaterial, that we will prefer to the current one.

I got an internship I applied for. I know, I should look for a real job, a paid job, but what with the current economic situation and the fact that I’m an economics major, internship is good.

Only, I don’t want it anymore.

Once I got it, I was like “nah, not so interesting”. It’s not enough. If it was this easy to get the internship, I should go after something more challenging. I mean, I could get something else, too. This is no longer enough.

I wonder if the internship has an NHL clause. Maybe I should ask for one.

Here we go! Friday, Apr 24 2009

It starts today!

Are you excited?

Spinning it… Friday, Feb 20 2009

Some time ago I decided that I’m no longer going to let things hold me back. That I’m going to turn the negative or problematic things around enough times until they suit me, and work in my advantage and not opposite me. I’ll spin it. (like the whole hockey/thesis thing)

Cost Accounting, the one exam I cannot seem to pass… I have a mental block, no doubt, because I just don’t like it. Now I came up with making it work for me! I’m simply going to study the subject as if I’m actually planning on starting my own business! I’ll make it personal. I’ll apply my own interests to it. Yes, seems simple and seems like something I should have been doing all along. But until now, I didn’t have the passion for something like that.

Now I do!

So I’ll just read “product” and think of something I could make, like a handbag. “Raw material costs” become “costs of yarn and sequins”, “unfinished inventory” becomes “bags that need a lining” and “profit margins” becomes “my shoe money”.

I’m so smart is scares me.

And they say there’s no magic in pro sports anymore Sunday, Dec 14 2008

I guess it’s things like this that make me fall in love with the game of ice hockey over and over again…

Been away, but back now… Saturday, May 17 2008

I know, I know. I’ve promised a million times not to abandon you all like this without a word and yet here I did it again. A very old friend whom I’ve known practically my whole life came over for a visit almost two weeks ago on Tuesday. That was a blast! H and I are rather impossible when we get together, we’re first to admit that. No, strike that, we revel in it. So Wednesday kicked off with us dancing in our nightwear all over the flat, singing national anthems (we couldn’t remember how the US anthem goes after the first line, I know, terrible of me, I should know it! but I pulled blank. I did remember it later, though. But we had to look it up and found a whole bunch of anthems on YouTube.), watching the best bits of several Disney movies… All in all just having a laugh. It was so great to have her here.

Then on Friday she had to return to France and I flied over with her for the weekend. It was so great to see some old friends and hanging out in the old places. And get some spring/summer shopping done, of course!

Returning to Finland on Sunday, it was back to school work again with a couple of exams. And of course, the big games in hockey. And really, right now I’m not in a mood to talk about either topic.

Why? Because I’m having some big trouble at school regarding my graduation. I might have to postpone it. But I’ll think about it on Monday, I can’t really do anything about it over the weekend anyways.

Hockey? Finland lost to Russia 4-0 last night, and finds itself in the bronze game against Sweden. BF was so sad! And when he called I was asleep, and all “go away, I need to sleep” which was very Bad Girlfriend of me. I feel terrible about that.

Oh, speaking of BF! He’s doing the whole caveman “I hit you in head with my club and drag you to me cave by hair” -look again. Oddly enough, though, I’m actually warming up to the beard. What’s wrong with me?? Well, those moves are pretty much what’s needed if he wishes to get me to their summer place over the summer again. I hate nature and I only agree to go for the view. BF likes to chop wood. Topless. Can you blame me?

My Friend With Huge Boobs was supervising the exam I took yesterday (which included questions such as “explain the terms ‘game’ and ‘Nash equilibrium’, which was ridiculously easy, although I don’t think the latter had anything to do with Canada’s Rick Nash, favourite player of H. Although she only likes him because the first time she heard his name she accidentally heard “ass” as his last name and found that absolutely hilarious! Yeah, she’s weird. I love her. And I digress.) Anyways, My Friend With Huge Boobs was there, and when I arrived, almost late, she waved me over to the front, with a seat at the very front row almost in front of everyone else. “I saved you a special seat.” Gee, thanks dahlin’!

Anyways, it’s been an eventful break for me, yet there’s not much to tell. I know, weird, huh? I guess my mind is still in a funk over the loss yesterday. BF was so so disappointed. Poor thing.

The NHL Guy from the Hot Deam Wednesday, Apr 23 2008

Okay, it would seem that I’m back to my old habits of reporting minuscule events in my blog. And that based on this blog I have absolutely no social life.

Do you remember when I told you about the phone calls I made to random NHL clubs? And that the Finnish guy’s clubs receptionist sounded like she had a hockey (goalie’s) stick sideways up her butt? And that finally I had to call BF’s club? And that they were helpful? And that the next night I had a naughty dream about the Finnish guy?

You do? What’s that? You took notes? Awww, you shouldn’t have!

Aaaaanyways. I dipped deep into my pool of HIFK spirit and kick-butt-attitude (also known as the List of Things To Do To Avoid Doing What One Has To Do) and decided to give The Hot Dream Guy (not that he is hot, the dream was) one more chance. This time I did not reach him, but an assistant to his boss, a very nice Miss D, and she promised to pass along a message. So I emailed her, and she promised to give it forward to The Hot Dream Guy straight away. And I’m totally playing the “I’m a Finn too” -card here (ha ha) so… here’s hoping!

On the other news, I tried to reach that one guy from BF’s club. He wasn’t at his phone. And we all know how much I love leaving messages to peoples voice mail! So I’m going to harass him again tomorrow. *insert Dr. Evil laugh here*
