This is something many of my friends who love reading do. They set a challenge, a goal, make a plan on what to read. And while I’m not willing to let go of my freedom when it comes to picking my reading based on my mood, I’m thinking of making some sort of plan. Not to limit myself, but to guide myself and maybe make my next selections easier. And yes, to make a dent in that TBR pile of mine.

So, here are the challenges I put before myself for the future, and for the 2009. Overlaps are perfectly fine.

Vancouver 2010 Challenge

The goal is to catch up with all the Winter Olympic Games host countries, reading a book for each Games hosted (two time host, two books) before the 2010 Games start in Vancouver. The list of countries to read is as follows:

  • France: 3 (Chamonix, 1924; Grenoble, 1968; Albertville, 1992)
  • Switzerland: 2 (St. Moritz, 1928 and 1948 )
  • USA: 4 (Lake Placid, 1932 and 1980; Squaw Valley, 1960; Salt Lake City, 2003)
  • Germany: 1 (Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 1936)
  • Norway: 2 (Oslo, 1952; Lillehammer, 1994)
  • Italy 2 (Cortina d’Ampezzo, 1956; Torino, 2006)
  • Austria: 2 (Innsbruck, 1964 and 1976)
  • Japan: 2 (Sapporo, 1972; Nagano, 1998 )
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina: 1 (Sarajevo, 1984)
  • Canada: 2 (Calgary, 1988 and Vancouver, 2010)
  • Russia (Sochi) has been granted the 2014 Games. That’s optional.

I’ve listed possible books for this challenge, and will also keep track of books that fit the criteria as I read them, in this post.

Adapted 1001 Books To Read Before You Die -Challenge

I’m adapting the 1001 books listed by Peter Boxall in his 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die to fit my tastes. That’s to say, I know I won’t read, ever, under any circumstances, any horror and most likely sci fi either. So I’m skipping those. And all gross things. I like to keep my books civilised, I supposed. Well-dressed, at least.

I’m going through the book, and making the adapted list in this post.

Non-fiction of the Month -Challenge

I have a huge list on non-fiction books that I’ve been meaning to read, ‘when I have time’. So, I’ll tackle them with this. Too bad I already read The Filthy Rich Handbook. *grin* The list of books for this challenge is here.
